RYA First Aid

This one-day RYA Basic First Aid course covers all the usual first aid subjects but from a boating perspective. It is aimed at anyone who goes afloat, whether on inland waters, rivers, estuaries or on cross channel passages.

In a medical emergency, a little first aid knowledge and immediate action can save lives, especially in remote locations. 

This one-day Emergency First Aid at Work course is designed to provide a working knowledge of first aid for people using small craft and to support skippers.

This course is required for people working in the marine industry as RYA instructors. 

 

The subjects specific to boating include:

  • The recovery position in a confined space
  • CPR, including the drowning protocol
  • Cold shock and hypothermia from immersion and/or exposure
  • Seasickness and dehydration

Booking information:

Please prepare for a long day. The course has a minimum delivery time of 8 hours and will run from 10am 6pm with a number of breaks throughout the day. Please arrive 10 minutes early to enable the course to start on time with everyone present.

 

 

There will be a break for lunch. It is a good idea to come armed with some snacks and a flask to keep up energy levels during the day, tea & coffee will be available throughout the day

This course provides a working knowledge of first aid for all those who go afloat on inland waters or up to 60 miles offshore. The syllabus is based on the recommendations of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).

 

The certificate fulfills the requirements for:

The MCA Code of Practice for skippers of small commercial vessels up to category 2, including boat masters. CAT C Medical Stores element will be covered and, certificates will be endorsed as such.

  • A first aid certificate for offshore racers subject to World Sailing (formerly ISAF) regulations on first aid training (OSR: 6.05i)
  • All RYA practical instructors
  • By the end of the course you should be able to:
  • Perform CPR to current protocols, and understand the differential for drowning
  • Understand the importance of the recovery position and modifications for a small space
  • Apply direct pressure to a wound to control bleeding
  • Understand/treat medical shock, including reference to internal and external bleeding
  • Treat cold-water shock and hypothermia following immersion and/or exposure
  • Recognise the signs of a reduced level of response, to include head injuries

 

You will also be made aware of the general treatment for: breathing difficulties, anaphylaxis, hyperthermia, chest pain, seasickness, diabetic emergency, fractures, seizures, burns; be able to choose suitable first aid equipment (including for a boat), understand how to get medical advice or assistance by radio and understand how to prepare for casualty evacuation by helicopter.

 

The latest version of the RYA First Aid book is included with this course as is the RYA First Aid certificate (upon successful completion). This certificate is valid for 3 years.
